Over-Speed Training

 

Our spring/summer skills objectives are simple: over speed training and the small area game initiative. The power skating techniques are great concepts but are not enough to develop the complete player. Like Jack Blatherwick states (http://www.overspeed.info) “If you over intellectualize any motor skill, it will inhibit development”.

The over speed essentially develops a player’s skills and skating speed by training the mind and body at the highest intensity and tempo attainable. To develop a higher level of skill a player must train above his/her comfort level. Through "quality repetition" this higher level of comfort becomes second nature. By practicing quick bursts and high speed transition, this program improves skating speed and strength. The small area game initiative correlates with over-speed, promoting creativity and experimentation. Small-area games create a more competitive practice environment, eliminate the need for traditional conditioning drills, and keep more players moving. These games develop and improve individual and team skills. Players learn to excel in tight situations, develop game strategies, make better decisions and have greater enthusiasm for practice.

Players of all ability levels improve. Small-area games foster a love and enjoyment of the game because players and coaches have fun! WHAT SKILLS CAN BE TAUGHT USING SMALL-AREA GAMES? Skating, passing, shooting, stick handling, cycling, transitioning, angling, breakouts, special team situations, puck support, and hockey sense.
